The Keller family lives in Charleston, South Carolina. In the summer of 2004 their lives were changed forever when Shawn Keller, a Captain in the ARMY Reserves, answered Uncle Sam’s call and left the comforts of home for a twelve month deployment in the Middle East. At the time, Captain Keller’s daughter, Sarah, was four years old and the time apart was hard on everyone. Shawn’s wife, Alison, decided to write WHILE YOU WERE AWAY, DADDY as a way to help her family, and ultimately other families like hers deal with the separation that comes with deployment.
The Keller’s were reunited in the fall of 2005 after Shawn spent a year working with a convoy security unit that travelled throughout Iraq. Since that time, Shawn and Alison have both worked hard to share their story of hope with others. Now, two years after reuniting, the Keller’s have once again answered Uncle Sam’s call and Captain Keller has deployed to the Middle East. The family continues to gather strength from one another and know that no matter how much space lies between them, their love for one another will always remain the same.
