Shawn Keller was born in High Point, NC and spent a great deal of his childhood living in parts of South America and the southern part of the United States. Shawn moved to Charleston, South Carolina to attend The College of Charleston, where he received a BS in Geology. After graduating, Shawn attended Officer Candidate School and began his own business, BlackWater Woodworks. Shawn closed his business in the summer of 2004 in order to serve full time in the South Carolina Army National Guard and complete a twelve month deployment as the leader of a convoy security unit in Iraq. In September of 2005, Captain Keller returned home and decided to transfer to the United States ARMY Reserves and b egan training to work with a Civil Affairs Unit. The extensive training required him to attend numerous schools including, the Captain's career course in engineering, Airborne school, and Civil Affairs school. Shortly before his deployment, Shawn completed language school at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California where he studied french in anticipation of a deployment to Africa.
